What Is Induction Bending?
Induction bending is a hot-bending process that uses a localized induction heating coil to raise a narrow band of the pipe or section to a controlled temperature. As the material reaches the target temperature, a push mechanism advances it through the coil while bending it around a fixed pivot arm at a controlled radius. Because only a narrow band of material is heated at any given moment, the rest of the section remains cool and rigid — acting as a natural restraint that helps manage deformation during the forming process.
The result is a smooth, continuous bend that is well-suited to tight-radius applications, large-diameter pipe and tube, heavy-wall sections, and geometries where conventional cold-bending methods are not practical. Customers use induction bending when the section size, wall thickness, or required radius makes cold forming difficult or when the application requires a forming method that manages deformation more carefully than cold-bending can.

Why Use Induction Bending?
Induction bending is not the right process for every job — but for certain applications it is the most practical option available. Customers typically specify induction bending for the following reasons:
Tight-radius bends
Induction bending is well-suited to tight-radius bends in large pipe and structural sections where cold-bending equipment cannot generate the required force.
Large sections
Sections that are too large or too heavy for conventional cold-bending equipment can often be formed by induction bending.
Difficult geometries
Applications requiring tight control over the bend geometry — particularly in heavy-wall or large-diameter sections — benefit from the controlled nature of the induction process.
Repeatable production

Induction Bending vs. Conventional Bending
Induction bending is one of several forming processes Pacific Roll offers. The right method for a given job depends on the section size, material grade, wall thickness, required radius, geometry, and project requirements — not a blanket preference for one process over another.
Cold rolling and bending — the processes used for most structural steel work — are typically faster and less expensive for sections that are within the capacity of the cold-forming equipment. Induction bending becomes the more practical option when the section size, wall thickness, or required geometry exceeds what cold-forming can reliably produce.
